Attics containing appliances shall be provided with an opening and a clear and unobstructed passageway large enough to allow removal of the largest appliance but not less than 30 inches 762 mm high and 22 inches 559 mm wide and not more than 20 feet 6096 mm long measured along the centerline of the passageway from the opening to the appliance.

There are two items to consider when determining if an attic access is required.
An attic in which a fau is installed shall be accessible by an opening and passageway 30 x 30 in size.
Roof construction an attic access opening shall be provided to attic areas that exceed 30 square feet 2 8m2 and have a verti cal height of 30 inches 762 mm or greater.
1 attics that are small less than 30 square feet of area or under a low slope roof that does not have a minimum of 30 inches of clear opening height between the top and bottom structural members are not required to have an attic hatch by the building code.
The opening passageway must allow for unobstructed access.
The passage must not be smaller than 30 high x 22 wide and no longer than 20 unless it s at least 6 tall and then no more than 50 passageways must have a solid floor no less than 24 wide.
There must be an attic access opening large enough to remove the appliance but not less than 30 inches by 22 inches and a clear passageway not less than 22 inches wide by 30 inches high.
Attic access may be reduced to 22 x 30 provided the largest piece of equipment can be removed.
The framed opening shall not be less than 22 inches by 30 inches and shall be located in a hallway or other accessible location.
Minimum clear headroom in the attic space shall be provided at or above the attic opening.
An opening not less than 2 inches by 30 inches shall be provided to any attic area having a 2 clear height of over 30 inch30 inches.
The rough framed opening shall not be less than 22 inches.
